Banks in Sweden

The banking system of Sweden is stable, due to strong operating conditions and low interest rates, resulting in more solid profitability and asset quality.

The Swedish banking sector is made up of four main categories of banks: 

  • Swedish commercial banks
  • Foreign banks
  • Savings banks
  • Co-operative banks.

Currently, there are 124 banks operate in Sweden.

  • Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB)

  • Swedbank AB

Opening Hours

Banks in Sweden are usually Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 15:00. On Thursdays banks usually have extended hours and close at 18:00. All banks are closed on weekends and on public holidays.

Currency

The official currency in Sweden is the Swedish krona (SEK). One SEK subdivided into 100 öre. Banknotes have values of 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 kronor. Also, coins are available as 1, 2, 5 and 10 kronor.

Currency Exchange

You can get local currency (SEK) using a Visa, MasterCard, Maestro or Cirrus card at any ATM (Bankomat or Uttagsautomat). A small commission may be added for withdrawing funds, it all depends on the conditions of your bank.

ATMs are often available directly at the airport, for example, in Arlanda, Landvetter, Skavsta, Malmo, and Lulea.

You can also find the nearest currency exchange office, for example, Forex / X-change, Tavex, Change Group, Money Exchange, Ria or another exchange office. On their websites or mobile apps, you can see their exchange rates for different currencies and, for example, compare exchange rates for the dollar (USD), euro (EUR) or, possibly, the pound (GBP) with the Swedish krona (SEK).
