Banks in Norway
The Norwegian banking sector is characterized by several very large commercial banks, some regional banks and several small savings banks.
At the end of 2018, the Norwegian banking sector was made up of 125 banks. In addition, there were 14 branches of foreign banks in Norway. The market share of foreign bank branches was 21% and 38% in the domestic retail and corporate markets, respectively.
At the end of 2018, the total assets of the banking sector (including foreign companies) amounted to about 645 billion euros, corresponding to approximately 180% of Norway’s total GDP.
However, given the large presence of foreign banks, total assets relative to the size of the economy are markedly lower when it comes to Norwegian banks alone.
As more and more people use Internet banking services, the number of physical branches has decreased significantly in recent years. Mobile payment solutions have been well received by Norwegian households and are becoming increasingly popular. The expansion of digital banking has allowed the banking sector to significantly increase productivity and, consequently, reduce costs. In 2018, the ratio of costs and revenues in Norwegian banks averaged 45.9%.
